Impact of Glycomics is designed to bridge the gap!!! I’m Joseph McKenna, the host of the program. I had the opportunity to learn about Glycomics three years ago, from one of the leading researchers in the field. From St Georges University, London, he was lecturing on some of the specifics, to a room of medical professionals and researchers alike. At this time I had a realization, and had to pose a question to the gentleman during his presentation. “Is this as big as I think it is?”, “could this be the future of all health care, and a window into the workings of nature?” Glancing up from his slide show with cocked brow, wiley grin and true British form, he responded with a quiet, yet emphatically firm, “Yes”.

Since then I have been fulfilling my passion for science by reading research articles, visiting developing Glycomics departments of major universities such as Emory in Atlanta, GA and asking physicians and scientists for their take on it all. In doing so, I found an enormous gap in the proliferation of information. The scientific world is entrenched, roiling in data, and sharing with one another. However, the mainstream public is left with little to no knowledge of this amazing field. I personally find this science incredible, but as I read the research articles I develop plenty of questions. Some as simple as huh? Others as complex as what is Glucosidase inhibitor N-butyl-deoxynojirimycin?

With such riveting questions for the researchers as "HUH?", I found the aforementioned gap. Not only is the mainstream knowledge of this science at a level of primordial soup, the understanding of the information presented is dark ages at best. The distance between the two parties is just too broad. I, the essential end user of these discoveries just don’t have the scientific knowledge to follow the conversation of researchers. Conversely my interest in what is being studied is huge. I am always excited about the future with answers to disease issues, understanding of the human body, recognition of genetic manipulation, and overall increased Possibility!
